Well, I decided to keep the post title G rated, although I am going to tell you what we call these treats at the office. I cannot take credit for this recipe, and it is so very simple there's no reason to enhance it-though I have a few ideas for presentation.
Last Christmas, I arrived at work to find a plate of chocolate covered cookies on my desk. There wasn't a note or a card accompanying it, so I had no idea who the generous baker was. As a rule, I don't eat food whose origin is a mystery, but my benefactor caught me on a day when I had skipped my usual visit to Starbucks and my stomach was growling. I picked one up, sniffed it, decided it was probably edible and bit through the chocolate coating. Inside was a chocolate filling that was dense and moist, and incredibly delicious.
Now, I pride myself on being able to pick out ingredients from foods I'm enjoying, but this one had me stumped. Who was the mystery chef that had left behind these tasty morsels? I had to find out. There were only a few people in the office, none had received the same plate of goodies and no one claimed to be the creator. Finally, in the afternoon, I saw the same plate at the receptionist's desk.
"Who made these cookies?"
"Jeff Wall, aren't they good?"
"Jeff Wall? That's impossible. His mom or girlfriend must have made them."
This is Jeff Wall. Don't let the picture fool you, he is not a metrosexual. He's a softball and broomball playing man's man who loves to hunt and fish. I would not swap recipes with this man, unless they involved venison. However, I had to have this recipe, so I called him.
"Did you leave this plate of cookies on my desk?"
"Yeah! Did you like them?"
"Who made them?"
"Me!"
"You did not. Really, who made them?"
"Me. They're really easy, you just crush up an entire bag of Oreos and then soften a bar of cream cheese and mix it together. Then you roll the mixture into one inch balls, freeze them for ten minutes and dip them in almond bark. That's it."
"No.Way. That's it? I don't even like Oreos, but these are incredible."
That's it. That's the recipe. One 8 ounce block of softened cream cheese and a package of Oreos. At home, my son Alex has taken over the preparation and uses a large food processor to make them. They are irresistible and everyone is amazed at the ease of preparation. I think these would be great sprinkled with toffee chips or decorated ornately with royal icing flowers. Drizzle them with white chocolate or sprinkles. Really, let your imagination run wild. Make them for someone's birthday and package them in a fancy box or tin. No one needs to know how pedestrian they really are.
And because he introduced us to this recipe, at work these delightful confections are called "Jeff Wall's Balls," and whenever we mention them, licentious laughter ensues. The gals at the front desk like to share what they did to "Jeff Wall's Balls" that was different than the last time.
Ahh, nothing like a little sexual harassment to spice up a recipe!
